It All Starts With the List

The most prominent part of any smart shopping trip starts with the list. Without the list you will just be wandering up and down the aisles unsure of what to buy because you don't know what you need! How many times have you gotten home after a grocery trip only to find that you forgot something prominent like toilet paper or cat litter? This means a return trip to the store which wastes not only time but gas as well.

Having a shopping list in hand when you walk in the door ensures that you won't forget the stuff you need. It also helps you get straight through the store a lot faster cause you know which aisles you can skip and you don't have to sit and stare at the rows of food and wonder if you need any of them.

The first thing you'll need of policy is some paper and something to write with. You can use just about anyone for a list, even the backs of old envelopes, but since you are going to be doing this a lot now you will want something better. A small pad of steno paper only costs a merge of bucks and is easy to carry nearby and easy to take off old lists to throw away (or recycle!). Just get something big enough to not get lost and small enough that it won't be a burden to carry nearby with you.

Ideally, you want to keep the notebook someplace in the kitchen where it's not in the way but also not where it will get lost. As you realize that you are out of something or that you want to pick up something, write it down on the list. A lot of times we realize on Wednesday that we are almost out of cooking oil but on Saturday when we have gotten to the grocery store we have forgotten all about the oil.

By the time the week comes to an end and it's time to hit the store, you will have a nice description of everything that you need. But don't run out the door just yet! Grab the list and do a scan of your pantry, freezer, and bathroom cabinets to make sure you haven't missed anything.

Double check and make sure you have fullness of:

  • eggs
  • milk
  • cooking oils
  • spices
  • sugar
  • salt
  • flour
  • toilet paper
  • toothpaste
  • paper towels
  • cat litter
  • pet food
  • ketchup
  • mustard
  • mayonnaise
  • coffee

These are all items that once you explore you don't have them it's a real pain to go out and get them. Make a quick check before every grocery trip to make sure that you have enough of them to get straight through the week, and if you don't then add them to your list!

This will also save you some money, but not just on gas. Ever seen how much toilet paper or toothpaste costs at your local "convenience" store or gas station? Expect to pay nearly twice as much, if not more, for these tasteless items if you can't get to Wal-Mart or Kroger's.

A good shopping list disposition is a must have for any smart shopper. It will save you a lot of time and hassle every year and allows you to best plan your shopping trips nearby sales and coupons, salvage you even more money. So get started on your list today and start reaping the benefits on your next grocery trip.
